I’ve known most of my life that Benjamin Spock (1903-1998), the famous baby book author and doctor, was my
third cousin first cousin, twice removed (in other words, my grandmother’s first cousin).* I don’t know a lot about his life, but had read somewhere that he once ran for president of the U.S. I looked it up just now on Wikipedia. And, well, I’m feeling kind of proud of him right now:
In the 1972 United States presidential election, [Benjamin] Spock was the People’s Party candidate with a platform that called for free medical care; the repeal of “victimless crime” laws, including the legalization of abortion, homosexuality, and cannabis; a guaranteed minimum income for families; and the immediate withdrawal of all American troops from foreign countries.
(Note: Links in the quoted text from Wikipedia still work. I tried to remove them but can’t.)
