Question about kitties...

So I have two cats. One of them is significantly fatter than the other.

I tried separating them to feed them, but if they are apart (in different rooms) they will freak out and don't eat at all. So what do I do? I don't want them to be unhealthy, but right now I have one healthy cat, and one kinda pudgy-bordering-on-too-fat cat. The vet told me to start limiting food for the fatter one, but I don't know how to do that since they eat out of the same bowl (see above: they freak out of separated).

Any tips or suggestions? I tried putting different amounts of food in two separate bowls, but they are both grazers and if I take the bowl away after a bit they both start to freak out, and the smaller one doesn't get enough food. No matter what I've tried, they do not handle specific eating times at all. They want their allotment of food and they want to graze on it all day.

Edit: I'm kind of drunk, so please forgive typos.
