How do you feel about interpreting a character who is one sexuality as another sexuality - (Edit to add) and creating fan art, fanfic, mods for games, etc for it and letting the public see? (Because I don't write posts well, I should clarify that I don't mean taking a book character and changing their orientation for a TV show - I'm more taking about fans taking characters from popular media and changing them in their own art - IE: Writing fanfiction about a character that is straight on a TV show and showing them as gay/lesbian)

For example how do you feel about:

  • Straight characters as gay/lesbian
  • Straight characters as bisexual/pansexual
  • Gay/lesbian characters as bisexual/pansexual
  • Bisexual/pansexual characters as Gay/lesbian.
  • Gay/lesbian characters as straight
  • Bisexual/pansexual characters as straight

I don't think most people have a huge issue with the first two - often times it's the only representation any of us see. And I think a lot of people have an issue with the last two because there are already so many straight characters to choose from - why take one of the few that is actually queer.

Where I'm having an issue is I have the opinion that perhaps interpreting a Gay/lesbian character as bi/pan isn't a massive slight against gays and lesbians and isn't the same thing as taking a queer character and making them straight. After being told (on Tumblr.. so not too surprised) that "bisexual" is really just watering down a gay/lesbian character for straight consumption, and that taking a gay male character and making them bi is really just forcing men on women's emotions and time, and that taking a lesbian character and making them bi is misogynistic and lesbophobic.. I thought I'd ask a more diverse community. Am I crazy?
