Do not read if you don't want to be super depressed about people in general. (Trigger warning: sexual battery.)
An article from the Guardian this morning covered the story of an 8-year-old Yemeni child bride who died on her wedding night from internal bleeding caused by a uterine rupture. She was married off to a man 5 times her own age. The chiefs of the girl's village are apparently trying to cover up the story, and several local officials have denied the incident. However, several villagers confirmed the story, warning journalists not to report on it.
This is so tragic. Yemen is extremely impoverished, so apparently many families marry off their young daughters to avoid the cost of raising children. I don't know what kind of recourse there is for her rapist (because, let's face it, this girl was raped to death). I do hope coverage of these atrocities in the media will shed light on these kinds of horrible practices and lead to social change.
