Welcome To The Bitchery

Richard Adams, author of Watership Down, dead at 96

I read Watership Down when I was 21, and it remains one of my favorite books. I remember finishing the last page and closing the book so excited, and wanting more. I listlessly started and set aside several books unfinished just after finishing it; nothing could match the feeling I got when reading about those rabbits and their travels and wars.

I was so completely absorbed by the world Adams created. I loved to read about rabbits who have complex hierarchies and cultures, but who, being rabbits, don’t understand roads or the concept of a raft. I still don’t eat rabbit because I always think about Hazel-rah or Fiver.

I think about the book often, even though I only read it once so long ago. hearing about Adams’ death really makes me sad because now truly we can’t ever open another window to that wonderful rabbit world.
