Yusra Mardini, Olympic Refugee Team swimmer
Escaping from Syria across the Aegean Sea in a dinghy, Yusra Mardini and her sister were the only people in the group of 20 who could swim. Normally this is not important. It only matters if the boat begins to sink. Which Yusra’s dinghy did. Yusra and her sister jumped into the cold waters and pushed the boat for three hours. The engine was dead and without their work the boat would have capsized. All 20 people would have been lost. Obviously she succeeded. Imagine pushing that boat for three hours in the cold rough waters. Behind you the civil war destroying everyone and everything you’ve known. In front of you only hope that a
better life is possible. Courage like this, hard cold, tenacious courage shown by the John Lewis’s and Malala Yousafzai’s of this world leave speechless. I am in such awe of them. I complain about the corruption in the Olympics and their terrible lack of accountability. But I have to give them credit, the Olympic Refugee Team is a fantastic idea.
I wanted to ad this video. This girl is amazing.
