Don't know if this has been posted yet, but I just found this letter that S. O'Connor apparently wrote to Miley Cyrus about "pimping" herself to the music industry.

Apparently Miley said Sinead was one of her influences and the Wrecking Ball video was supposed to be modeled after one of Sinead's old videos.

While I agree with what Sinead says in principle re: the music industry will use you, and will disregard your dignity if it makes them money, there's a lot of... slut shamey language that I really don't like.

None of the men oggling you give a shit about you either, do not be fooled. Many’s the woman mistook lust for love. If they want you sexually that doesn’t mean they give a fuck about you. All the more true when you unwittingly give the impression you don’t give much of a fuck about yourself. And when you employ people who give the impression they don’t give much of a fuck about you either. No one who cares about you could support your being pimped.. and that includes you yourself.

Yes, I’m suggesting you don’t care for yourself. That has to change. You ought be protected as a precious young lady by anyone in your employ and anyone around you, including you. This is a dangerous world. We don’t encourage our daughters to walk around naked in it because it makes them pray [sic] for animals and less than animals (a distressing majority of whom work in the music industry and the associated media).

I mean....okay, but Miley is allowed to be sexual if she wants to, and I don't like the idea that there's no possible way she could be making a conscious choice to be sexual on her own terms. My problem with Miley is that she seems to think that sexy=adult=naked. But even so, she's allowed to be naked if she wants to be. It may be a little... tasteless depending on the circumstances, but that's for her to deal with in ten years when she looks back on the pictures, not for us to titter about.

And "you ought to be protected as a precious young lady"? *Barf* I don't think it gets any more paternalistic than that.

I mean, I know Sinead means well, but I don't think she's helping. I don't konw much about her other than that she tore up the picture of the Pope that one time on SNL, so I don't know if this is par for the course with her. Thoughts?
