I really, REALLY do not want to get flamed for this, but I feel like it needs to be said:
I love KM and I support her and it is very shitty the way Gawker has treated her, but please, please, PLEASE do not re-appropriate the "Solidarity is For" tag in her name. I've only seen it happen a handful of times so far but I want to nip it in the bud. Don't do it. I'm begging you.
That tag that Mikki Kendall created was specifically to call out white women's complicity in BW's oppression. That is not the conversation we're having when we talk about KM. I know that "solidarity" is a word, and it means a thing, and it can technically be applied here and be grammatically correct, but that specfic phrase has a specific significance in the feminist blogosphere and to use it like this is to co-opt it, and is frankly it's a form of erasure.
I get that it might seem like I'm being oversensitive, but I promise I'm not trying to start shit. It is just not okay to me to see something that was created to call out WW, then be used in support of a WW. It's.... not okay. Because let us be very VERY real for a second. Things are really shitty for KM right now. But if she were a WoC to whom $60K had been donated anonymously...? Exactly.
KM is amazing and awesome and we all support her, but let's not accidentally trample on BW and the things they have created for their own empowerment. This is not KM's fault either, so don't think I'm calling her out. I'm not. How other people talk about her isn't her fault. (I mean... clearly).
But... yea. Just... please? Pretty please? For me? I will resort to bribing if necessary.
I am NOT calling anyone out in particular, (cannot stress this enough) but this is just something I hope that everyone will be cognizant of in the next few days, or however long it take for us to stick it to Gawker. It's very easy to get caught up in a specific cause and not realize how damaging your actions may be to another. I know most of us consider ourselves to be intersectional, so now's a great time to knowingly put that into practice.
Seriously. Don't stone me. I'm not upset. I just thought it should be said.
