So I don't want to be a professor. PhD guidance please

Hi all,

Being in a PhD program is tough. But I have realized while I was here for a year completing my masters, that I don't want to be a professor (and if I did go into this, I wouldn't become an education professor despite my degree choice in education). In the long run, I would like to be a researcher at an institute, work for the government in the department of Ed, or a student affairs director. I know these jobs are out there and I have some experience in this stuff, but what type of things should I look out for as I continue through my PhD program? How do I gain the appropriate experiences?

Also, I cannot tell my advisor, this person has been in the academy for some time and believes that I will magically get a tenure track position despite my complete knowledge of how difficult it really is do this. She knows nothing
