I read this novel in the 80s and well reading it again I forgot about 95 percent. I was confused towards the end. Or it was a major plot flaw.
The Overlords took all the children including infants. They had started to be transcended essentially the next stage of human development. There would be tens of millions of pregnant women so did the Overlords pick up the babies after.
Jan when he came back from the Overlord planet was that psychologically the reason why no more births after the Overlords took the children.
This is my problem. It would mean no one at all had sex once they realized they were the last generation. So ALL of humanity had to have gone celibate. Really? You would think for the next 35 years the Overlords would be picking up infants. Given that the initial retrieval were all kids 10 and under.
I felt sorry for the Overlords they were just doing the Overmind’s work knowing there species were at biological dead end.
Really good novel and not long. SF writers back then seemed to understand epic does not always mean neccessary. Its about 240 pages.
