A bunch of us got laid off about five years ago. It broke my heart. I loved my job. It's the only place I felt I belonged.
I still keep in touch with a lot of the people who work there. Today one of them posted a note she got sent that said something along the lines of "you must be amazing if you survived all the layoffs!"
She is terrific. But you know what, so were those of us who got laid off. We got laid off because we were the newest on staff. The bosses were able to save their favorites and all but one of those saved was a white male. Note all but one of the top brass is a white male as well, mostly over 55.
I didn't do anything wrong. I didn't do anything to deserve being laid off. I worked my butt off and was one of the top producers. It didn't matter.
I'm happy my friend still has a job. But she didn't get laid off because of her seniority, not because she's the best that ever was. She's good at what she does, no doubt. But that doesn't mean the rest of us were crap.
