I’m very white. Yesterday I was outside all day, and even though I reapplied SPF50, I still got a bit of a sunburn. I mentioned this to a friend last night, and he said he’s never gotten sunburn, because he’s black, and black people don’t burn.

I was a little surprised, partially because I’ve read that white people assuming black people can’t tan/burn is one of those really common othering assumptions white people make. I mentioned this (we talk about race, he’s very open and happy to talk about this kind of stuff and has no problem telling people when he’s not) and he basically said that all those people saying that on the internet are white people pretending to be black people.

This morning I woke up to a facebook post by another friend, who is also black. It was a selfie. Complaining of sunburn.

Huh.
