Welcome To The Bitchery

The British Government Thinks I'm Living There Illegally LOL (but not LOL at all)

I went to grad school in Scotland. This seemed like a great idea at the time. When I left my PhD program early and returned to the States, nobody told me that I would have to prove to the government that I’d left.

About a year and a half after leaving, I got an email from the Home Office saying my visa was due to expire and I needed to either renew it or prove that I’d left the country. However, since nobody told me I would have to do this and the first I was hearing about it was a year and a half after coming home, I no longer had my flight information, which was what they were asking for. Then they told me I could show them scanned photos from my passport so they could see the stamps, but they decided my passport scans didn’t show what they were looking for. Since I live in New York I offered to go to the British embassy with my passport in person... and they just never emailed me back.

2 weeks ago I had the brilliant idea of getting in touch with my school to get their help. I just got an email from them that basically said “Yeah they said they have no proof that you’re not living here illegally, but hey, just don’t ever come back and you won’t have to worry about it. Hope that helps.”

I emailed back saying that I would like the option of visiting again in the future and asking again about going to the embassy in person, but honestly, everyone on their end is such a fucking idiot I’m pretty sure I am never going to be able to go back there.

Update: It just occurred to me that the exact wording of the email is “is the student intending to return to the UK?” THEY KNOW I’M NOT THERE. I CAN’T BE “RETURNING” TO THE UK IF I’M ALREADY THERE! My head is going to explode.
