So in reading the comment sections of articles on Gawker sites over the past couple of days, I keep reading comments to the effect of "This is why we need to legalize prostitution. If this guy could have gotten his rocks off with a prostitute, maybe this wouldn't have happened."

Leaving aside the issue of whether or not what this guy was looking for could actually have been found with a prostitute (IMHO, he was looking for someone to want *him*, not his money, so a prostitute wouldn't have worked.), I feel a disturbing undercurrent in those comments. Kind of sense that sex workers are being thought of as sort of sacrificial lambs offered up to men with violent tendencies to keep the rest of us safe.

There's no way to knowing what would have happened if this guy had gone to a prostitute, but based on some of the truly disturbing things he has written about his life in his manifesto/memoir, I find myself wondering if a sex worker would have been safe with him.

What do you think, Groupthinkers?
