After the last two years of hate-watching NBC’s [Musical] Live! performances, I wasn’t that enthusiastic about this year’s production. But a couple of things give a glimmer of hope: all the main actors (Mary J Blige! Queen Latifah! Uzo Aduba as Glinda!) have singing and acting talent, the girl who plays Dorothy is an unknown 18-year-old instead of a shoehorned B-list celebrity, and the costumes look properly imaginative and Broadway-worthy instead of like local production knock offs. We’ll see what happens I guess, but at least the previews give me more excitement than the past two Live! productions ever managed to do. Maybe NBC has figured out that your main charactet should probably be a Broadway-quality star and not just a decent pop star with no acting experience, or a decent actor with a serviceable voice.
