Any TAL listeners our there?? Does the show feel tone deaf to you right now? I feel like they’ve really been missing the mark lately.

AND NOW I WILL AIR MY GRIEVANCES

A few weeks ago, they featured a story about how they raise money for political candidates, which I found to be depressingly unrelateable. I got so irritated with the way the guests on the show were talking about money, like millions of dollars is chump change, that I couldn’t listen to the rest of the episode. What the fuck? This isn’t the Forbes money podcast. This is a podcast about storytelling.

Then I was listening to this weekend’s episode on the bus this morning, and the first story was about a man who sued the State of New York because they required him to wear a speedo for his swimming test. He felt exposed and discriminated against as a 58 year old man. I was just sitting there, steaming, because wow, it took this guy 58 years to feel what a woman feels every time she goes to the beach, or even out in public to a certain extent. And he did something about it, which is great, and I’m all for fighting discrimination, but it pales in comparison to the amount of women who have to dress a certain way to get a job or a promotion. The gender hypocrisy of the lawsuit wasn’t even acknowledged.

I’m just short of shocked that their journalism has had these huge, gaping holes. It’s almost like they’ve forgotten their audience. Or maybe their audience has become more narrow and I don’t fit in anymore. It feels like every time I listen, something pisses me off. The bad stories are usually countered with good ones, but sometimes I can’t even make it through the rest of the episode because I feel so betrayed by their choices. What is going on??
