As i was driving home from the pulltab booth job tonight, i heard part of an earlier news conference which gave updates on the number of magazines found in the church (15, of 30 rounds each), on MPR/NPR.

The man (Law Enforcement Officer of some type) speaking went on to talk about the former mother-in-law of the shooter, and how she appeared to be the target of the shooter (the shooter had evidently texted her in the time leading up to the shooting?).

And then he said the thing that made me YELL at my radio.

The MOST UNFORGIVIBLY TONE DEAF thing, i think i’ve perhaps EVER heard someone in Law Enforcement say (i found a video clip of what i heard at approximately 33 seconds into the below clip, it’s the 2nd link-from this NBC page):

The direct quote which made me rage:

“There are many ways that he could’ve taken care of the mother-in-law, without coming with 15 loaded magazines and assault rifles to a church. I think he came here with a purpose and a mission. And, uh, I have, you know... (indecipherable words)”

There aren’t even WORDS in the English language to describe the.... RAGE... i feel, even typing out what he said!!!!!

“There are many ways THAT HE COULD HAVE TAKEN CARE OF THE MOTHER-IN-LAW”?!?!?!!!!!!!!

WHAAAAAAAT in the name of ALL that is holy?!?!!

1. THIS POOR WOMAN WILL ALREADY HAVE TO LIVE WITH SURVIVORS’ GUILT.*

2. HER OWN MOTHER WAS KILLED IN THE SHOOTING.

3. DUDE:

👏👏👏SHE👏IS👏IN👏NOOOOOOOOOOOOO👏WAY👏RESPONSIBLE👏FOR👏THE👏ACTIONS👏OF👏HER👏EX-SON-IN-LAW👏YOU👏ASS👏👏👏!!!!!!!!!!

I’m gutted, yet IRATE, at the fact that, in the midst of this tragedy, when SO MANY have been victimized and lost loved ones, one of the KEY victims is (yes, unintentionally, i’m sure!), being victim-blamed, because, basically, her shitty-ex-s.i.l *Should’ve tried to kill her elsewhere.*

***👏That’s👏what👏it👏MEANS👏when👏someone👏says👏: “There are many other ways he could have taken care of (her)”👏***

It means, “Yeah, if that dumbass had just killed her somewhere else, like at her house, all these other people wouldn’t have had to have died.”

Nothing about the fact that IT IS TOO GODDAMN EASY for people CONVICTED of Donestic Violence to get deadly weapons.

Nothing about the scourge of DV, and just how Deadly it can be.

Nothing about how, hmmmm🤔, *Maybe* we could rethink selling civilians tactical gear, high-powered, high-repitition weapons, or *multiple* large-capacity magazines...

NOPE.

Just, essentially, “Why didn’t this fuckup just off his ex-mil somewhere else?”

Too damn often, Toxic Masculinity and Domestic Violece rub on each other, Law Enforcement has to deal with the fallout, and sometimes (many times?), because L.E.Os’re focused on the “Solve the Crime!” aspect of a case, THEY *ALSO* VICTIMIZE THE VICTIMS.

I HOPE to god that *Someone* calls this L.E.O. out, and he apologizes Heartily(!) to the woman he just implied *ought to have been killed elsewhere, so as to inconvenience other people less* but i HIGHLY DOUBT that will happen.

I just feel SO horrible for her, her daughter, the rest of their family, and everyone involved with their church.

*You can’t convince me that ANYONE who was her shoes WON’T live with survivors’ guilt. Her daughter’s ex threatened her, and basically hunted her down, murdering or injuring damn near everyone in her tiny church.

That shit SCARS people, emotionally. In many cases FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIFE.

My heart just ACHES for her, at the unfairness of this man’s poorly-chosen victim-blaming words.
