Welcome To The Bitchery
Welcome To The Bitchery

Victoria Wood was truly a National Treasure, that phrase gets thrown around a lot in Britain but Wood was top 5. She passed away aged 62 from cancer.

She was a woman being brilliant, witty and dirty at a time when women weren’t leads in comedy. She won a variety talent show as a teenager in the 1970's and then wrote and performed in some of the most beloved comedy tv shows for the next 4 years.

Losing her at 62 is a huge loss for British culture, even though she was only doing a little work at a time, a Christmas special here, a one off drama there everything she touched was gold.

Here are some clips (many that don’t feature her but actors she collaborated with who themselves are mainstays of British tv and film like Julie Walters and Celia Imrie).

If you only have time for one clip watch her famous song the Ballad of Barry and Freda, it’s exactly what British humour is.

And if you ever think to yourself you want to watch a British sitcom don’t go for the Office or Gavin and Stacy, watch Dinnerladies, a sitcom about exactly what it sounds like starring numerous funny and talented women and written by their leader Victoria Wood.
