You know when you're at the gym, and you're stuck watching whatever lousy program is on whatever channel the gym has decided to show on the communal TVs that day? And you look at the various screens and your options are:

  • Men's sports,
  • Animal Planet show about a bunch of dudes fishing, and
  • WWF westling, and
  • The Bachelor

And you realize the only thing on TV at that moment that even shows women is a program about 25 women trying to maneuver their way to a marriage proposal from a guy they just met. Everything else is testosterone-on-steroids. That's a depressing moment.

That disappointment turned into bitter annoyance when The Bachelor took a commercial break, and it started advertising ABC's other shows. Have you ever noticed the titles of ABC's shows? They seem to be written and approved by a bunch of dudes who are only capable of thinking of women in cliched tropes and stereotypes. Here's a sampling:

  • Desperate Housewives
  • Trophy Wife
  • Wife Swap
  • Mistresses
  • Killer Women
  • Red Widow
  • Cougar Town
  • Don't Trust the B in Apt 23

So if women are in the title of an ABC show, they must be wives, mistresses, femme fatals, or bitches.

None of the other networks seem to have this issue. Not even Fox, y'all!

It makes me want to go patriarchy-smashing at ABC.
