Dr. Safiya Noble, author of Algorithms of Oppression, has been working for a decade to show how structural racism shows up and is reinforced in search engine results. Among other things, she calls for investment in public-interest technologies, for instance less advertising-based, commercially driven search engine that is socially responsible, curated and informed by experts in information organization.
Her very important work is not mentioned in Pantene’s new “de-biased search engine” browser extension advertising gimmick.
Obviously I am not the person who noticed this . . . credit goes to @schock on Twitter.
There’s a lot of important scholarship going on in this area. Pantene quotes . . . a Pew research report.
