Very exciting news in the world of ballet! The above statement is often hard to make without some severe side eye, put I swear I’m not trying to trick you!
The American Ballet Theatre (ABT) has named Misty Copeland their first EVER African-American principle dancer. The ABT has been in existence for 75 years and you may not have seen a great deal of professional ballet (I honestly don’t watch much myself- I don’t live in a place where there are frequent new ballets)...but this is a big fucking deal. She was the first black female in a national company to lead Swan Lake. She’s amazing.
I live in a small bit of hell, unwillingly surrounded by phrases like, “I don’t know why we have to celebrate the first X person to achieve this, let’s just celebrate the person.” NOPE. This is a big ass deal. Listen to Misty Copeland talk about her life and her role. She’s spent 14 years with ABT to achieve principle and she is wildly aware of the doors she just opened for young black women and men who want to be the the most astounding, a household name or just not be the only POC in the studio where they study.
[In case you live under a rock or just don’t give a fuck about ballet... Even in our “post- racial” (eye roll) ballet has remained a predominantly, exceedingly white art at the professional level.]
