With a fire in my apartment building this morning. Woke up to the alarm but I wasn’t leaving my apartment until absolutely necessary since I’ve been sick with (probably maybe if only I could get a test dammit) coronavirus. Previously the fire department has come when there was no fire at all* so I took the time to put on pants, a bra and shoes and grab a jacket. Terrible fire safety of course, but I was very grateful since it’s cold and windy as hell today. Folks in the wing near the fire were all in robes and sock feet with their cats or dogs peeking out the top. The police brought a heated bus but no one would get in because of the virus. Rumor (aka other tenants yelling at each other from not nearly far enough apart) has it the fire was in an unoccupied apartment and no one was hurt although there is for sure water damage in that wing. (Is it procedure to drain the fire hoses down the building staircases? Cause that was an interesting mess to walk into once they let us back inside.)
I’m glad no one is hurt and luckily the woman in the apartment right below the fire has family in the next town so she has someplace to go till the water damage gets sorted. Also the management company requires us all to have renters insurance so hopefully that will cover the damages to her stuff.
Hopefully you all had a less exciting morning!
*The last couple times they came they were literally wandering around the building and kept knocking on people’s doors to ask if they smelled anything which uh, didn’t inspire confidence let’s just say.
