I am going to put a whole bunch of kittens in here to make us all feel better.

What do you do when you just want your mind to not think about something? Particularly, a thought/image/fact/whatever you can't get out of your head. I read a very disturbing news item today and I find it hard to think about for more than a few seconds without wanting to cry (it involves an assault on a child) yet I can't stop it from popping into my head every so often. This has happened to me once before, last year when there was a long-form article somewhere about children dying from being accidentally left in cars. I think it's partly because I have a young child; not that people without children wouldn't also be disturbed and upset by these news items but it adds an extra layer of horror that the possibility exists of this happening to MY child.

What do you do to get these things out of your head completely, or at least get your mind to move past it more quickly, or not be as upset by it when you do think of it?

Add in I'm feeling a little guilt for wishing I could just not know about the news item when the people involved don't have that luxury.
