My mother and I went to an antique store yesterday and found this absolutely gorgeous furniture set seemingly from ancient times (probably Victorian times).

Anyway, we are having a major squabble over just what the heck kind of bird is carved into the back of the wood. I say it's a hornbill of some variety, she says it's a gryphon which is total nonsense because it doesn't have lion parts.

Second question is, does anyone know who might have made this gorgeous furniture or where I might be able to find the maker's mark?
