Here in NYC, we are blessed with not only the Union Square greenmarket on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, but with smaller markets every day of the week throughout the city.

This week, in addition to the usual tasty baked goods, organic honeys and jellies, and the ‘usual suspects’—potatoes, carrots, onions— that are available in almost every season, many of the height of the summer fruits and vegetables that we wait for all year are finally here. I know that greenmarkets/farmer’s markets are often seen as a somewhat elite pleasure, but the NYC greenmarkets take EBT/foodstamps and the vendors are generous with samples.

Week of July 11: beefsteak tomatoes, lettuces, eggplant, the very beginning of corn and peach time, cherries, blueberries, blackberries, string beans, apples, summer herbs, beets and radishes, garlic scapes, and beautiful wild flowers are just some of the luscious produce that I saw on Wednesday. What’s poppin’ at your green market?
