The powers that be decided that they would name the plaza next to city hall "Spokane Tribal Gathering Place" since it is near where the local tribes would traditionally meet and harvest salmon as the fish went up the falls.
They even included the phrase "The Place Where Salmon is Prepared" written in the local Salish language. The problem? Nobody has said what that phrase is in Salish. The local news simply said that neither they nor the city representatives could pronounce it and left it at that. I guess the little bit of extra work to find somebody to help them was deemed not worth it which is strange since somebody obviously provided them with the phrase in the first place. They also didn't see any need to actually interview a representative of any of the three local tribes.
