(This is an old thing I wrote and deleted because neo-nazis started trolling me, but now gawker is writing about him and I wanted to share it again- because this is copied and pasted from my email where it lived in the shadows, there are a few mistakes in the copying/pasting)
Thought Catalog recently published an article called "Asian Women Need to Stop Dating White Men." The piece was supposedly penned by a white feminist named "Anne Gus." The piece went semi-viral, and lead to most rightfully attacking the article. In the comments some were confused whether or not this was real, or satire.
But what most did not know, was that "Anne Gus" is a guy, and a BodyBuilding.com user named AryanofValhalla. This is proven by his multiple comments and threads saying he is in fact "Anne Gus," even right on his profile!
Not only is this user "Anne Gus" (will explain name in a moment) on Thought Catalog, but also a user named Lisa Woodbury who wrote a piece in defence of "Anne." But shouldn't we have guessed that when the woman's last name is Wood-bury?
After looking through the (very racist and misogynist) misc threads about "Anne" on the site, I saw that people were joking lots about how obvious the name was. "Anne Gus" refers to a term called 'Pepper your Angus' which has wonderfully been described by a user on the site as:
"Trolling is a game about identity deception, albeit one that is played without the consent of most of the players. The troll attempts to pass as a legitimate participant, sharing the group's common interests and concerns; the newsgroups members, if they are cognizant of trolls and other identity deceptions, attempt to both distinguish real from trolling postings, and upon judging a poster a troll, make the offending poster leave the group. Their success at the former depends on how well they – and the troll – understand identity cues; their success at the latter depends on whether the troll's enjoyment is sufficiently diminished or outweighed by the costs imposed by the group. Trolls can be costly in several ways. A troll can disrupt the discussion on a newsgroup, disseminate bad advice, and damage the feeling of trust in the newsgroup community. Furthermore, in a group that has become sensitized to trolling – where the rate of deception is high – many honestly naïve questions may be quickly rejected as trollings. This can be quite off-putting to the new user who upon venturing a first posting is immediately bombarded with angry accusations. Even if the accusation is unfounded, being branded a troll is quite damaging to one's online reputation."
It means prepare your butthole for battle of ***'s."
I have also had the displeasure of interacting with him on twitter. Where he says things such as:
"I'm trying to crush the Patriarchy just like you, you're overestimating white men"
"I am not the enemy, WHITE MEN ARE!"
This follows with his description of "Anne" on his bio: I'm a feminist. I'm a woman. I'm strong. I'm in my twenties. I'm beautiful. I deserve love. Give me it.
This young man thinks that feminism is a joke, and treats it as such.
On his post about Asian women dating white men, he's writing it from the perspective of a feminist white woman, as he does with other "Anne" posts.
He says he wants everything to go viral and get more popular.
Because apparently getting popular by mocking POC is the new trend, wanting to hurt even more people who have already been marginalized their lives with his fake feminist trolling. Because yes, if you look in the comments of his piece you'll see that people took it seriously, and were rightfully offended. Even if this is satire, which I doubt it is (just serious trolling), that would not matter because the punchline is still minorities. Asian fetish is not a joke.
And this isn't the last we'll be hearing from "Anne" either. As comments from him on his thread say he is working with more "miscers," and that "Something big is on it's way brahs."
Now, Nicole Mullen has reported about "Anne Gus" on Thought Catalog recently, in post called "'Time' Accidentally Publishes Article About Thought Catalog" in response to a Time article called "Thought Catalog Accidentally Publishes Fake Feminist Essay Jokily Penned By Gym-Bro." And all of this was a response to "Anne's" other post, called "5 Things Women Need to Do in Their 20′s (Or Else the Suffragists Died For Nothing)"
In Nicole's piece, she says:
"There is no AryanofValhalla."
The account on BodyBuilding.com was set up by our dear administrative assistant Wendy Les a while ago as a work of satire. A quick look at "his" other posts indicate that it is clearly a parody of the typical Gym Bro."
However his profile has been quite active for a long time. And why would an author parody a "Gym-Bro" on the site for years, laughing about feminism and laughing about racist comments from other users. Even laughing at rapey pornographic gifs.
And a Thought Catalog commenter said:
"out and out BS. I've communicated with Aryan several times. He's been around the misc bodybuilding forum for nearly 2 years. Please don't try to act like you've been planning this publicity stunt years in advance."
"Nicole" might just be a troll herself, if you take a look at 'her' bio. Nicole Mullen is Nick Mullen, a "comedian" from Austin TX.
Even if this was a "parody of a gym bro." Which I don't agree with. That means that it is a random writer, parodying a gym-bro thoroughly, who then is writing fake feminist essays? To do what? Mock feminism as well?
As I said, I highly doubt this is all a greater plan of satire, as his BodyBuilding.com interactions say other-wise.
