Why do writers in movies/TV shows only write about their lives?

Ugh... I just watched Cavemen (don't waste your time), and Skylar Astin plays an aspiring screenwriter who is basically writing the story of the movie. He even has trouble writing a believable love story because his own love life is not sorted out. This seems to be a recurring plot point, like with Dan Humphrey in Gossip Girl. I remember there was a whole story line where he got in trouble with his friends because his book was about their lives (with barely disguised names. Charlie Trout, anyone?). There are a few more examples, like in Moulin Rouge and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. You would think that real writers would depict other writers in a more realistic fashion. Do speculative fiction writers basically not exist in movies or TV shows?
