Honest confession: I do not understand where the "terrible writer" criticism of Dan Brown comes from. And I would like to understand why.

Don't get me wrong: I don't think he's necessarily a GOOD writer. But his stories are okay, at least enough to keep me interested to the ending, and I can't understand why people hate his writing to a seemingly Gwyneth-Paltrow degree. Maybe it's because I mostly read scientific journal articles and my bar is set so ridiculously fucking low, but I think there's something else to it.

Is it his diction? Is it the infinity billion plot twists for no reason other than to end the chapter on a cliffhanger? Is it the bastardization of theology? Is it a 50 Shades thing where mediocrity somehow manages to make infinity billion dollars and it's absolutely infuriating?
