This article on the appropriation involved in belly dancing is amazing. Articulate, thought provoking, and just the right mix of analytical and personal. The essay is one of the better finds I've had on Slate recently.

The actual topic though, is producing some difficult to sort feelings in me. Mostly about the line between appropriation and appreciation and how that line can be successfully navigated. I feel that the writer has a point. An important one. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't also understand how someone could find joy in a style of dance without necessarily understanding the background. How can one show appreciation while being respectful and not appropriate someone else's culture?

Anyway, I'd be interested to hear some other groupthink members weigh-in. (Plus, read the article, it's really fantastic).
