This story is crazy! Joanne Barnaby went out mushroom picking with her dog in a forest near Fort Smith in the Northwest Territories, Canada. She had just finished filling her pail, when she was confronted by a lone wolf.
Her dog drove the wolf on initially, but it kept stalking her and blocking her way back to the highway were her car was parked, over a twelve hour period.
Finally, around 4:30 in the morning, Barnaby hear something that sounded like a bear cub, calling for its mother. Then she heard the Mama bear reply. Barnaby decided to gamble on moving in the direction of the bear cub, hoping that the Mama bear would spot the wolf and go after it. Her luck held, and when she heard the mother bear and the wolf start fighting, she took off and was able to get back to her car.
Joanne Barnaby was extremely lucky. Mushroom picking alone in bear and wolf country without a gun or even bear spray is not a good idea. She also didn’t bring any drinking water with her, and just had a can of beer. I am so glad this story had a happy ending.
