For the past six months or so, I haven't used the dishwasher. The husband and I have been washing our dishes by hand and then throwing the dishwater into the backyard as an attempt to "water" the yard because DROUGHT. About five days ago we finally ran our dishwasher, and since then we've have an ant problem in the kitchen and my bathroom. Fucking little ASSHOLES. I surmise that they had been using the dirty dishes that had been sitting in the dishwasher for the past six months as food. Or maybe they had been using the dishwasher as their little home base while nothing was going on...who knows?

We started with spraying them with mint to break up their scent trails. It momentarily worked, but then it didn't. We upped it to spraying them with a vinegar/water solution, which pissed them off. Now we've moved to borax and diatomaceous Earth with the occasional spray of vinegar directly onto vertical-moving ants. All that had better work! I had to clean out some cupboards and throw out a bunch of old food because of all this. I shouldn't complain about the spring cleaning, but damn, I would've preferred different timing on all this crap.

Diatomacious earth immediately has results though, I must say. I was able to drop a couple of ants directly onto the stuff, and whoa boy, they hated it. Almost as much as I hate ants. Added bonus: both the diatomacious earth and borax will help keep fleas away when the weather warms up...the cats are allergic to them.

Tl;dr: ANT INVASIONS SUCK.
